The Reality of God

In the vast majority of cultures, there exists a strong faith in the existence of supernatural intelligence responsible for the creation of the earth and for things that happen in it. In fact, this is so universal that I am not aware of any culture that didn't have such a conviction in the most of its history.

If you are in a city and suddenly most people are running in panic in a certain direction, the sensible thing to do is to either run with them or at least make every effort to become aware of what the stampede is all about and be ready to do something about it. If you are inside a home where you can't feel the wind, yet you see the trees moving, it is safest to assume that wind exists and it is blowing. Therefore, when you see that the vast majority of humanity worships in one way or another it is safe to assume that there is a supernatural cause of this devotion, and the logical thing to do is to start moving in the direction of understanding why belief in deity is in the heart of nearly every human.

We should deliberate on this question now by posing the following question: why is there a universal instinctive belief in deity and its power over humanity?

Modern philosophers have vivid, overworked imaginations and offer many reasons other than God for this innate belief in God in most of humans. These philosophical explorations of nonsense are not valid enough to answer with the use of this space or my time (A dog can beat a skunk, but the victory is not worth the cost.). By the same token, all the objections of atheists and agnostics can't keep a simple honest man from assuming that a painting requires a painter, a watch requires a watch maker, and therefore creation requires a creator. More sophisticated men can arrive at supposed superior intellectual conclusions, but the most of humanity in touch with simplicity of everyday truth naturally conclude deity in the design of the universe.

Although there may be millions who claim no faith yet there are hundreds of accounts of such people, who had never called on God, who are suddenly praying to him in a crisis. Why this instinctive crying out to God? Have they so quickly forgotten their professor's intellectual explanations of God's non-existence?

The truth is that the head cannot exorcise what is naturally in our hearts concerning God. We can fill our minds with all kinds of alternatives to God as explanations for the existence of creation, but in the crux of crisis our instinct takes over without consulting our heads and the desperate need to survive naturally cries out to God. This underscores the great truth so often quoted by the more honest thinkers: "There are no atheists on a crashing plane".

If belief in God is so instinctive when facing death, why is it sometimes so illusive when facing life? The answer is in the different positions taken by the heart of a man and his mind. These mutual contradictory positions of the mind and heart developed from the fall of man and the displacement of man's intellectual focus from God to himself.

We have to understand that God didn't make man in man's image. Man has no valid image of his own. Man was made in the image of God. This image of God facilitated God's fellowship with man as his son, giving man autonomy within the framework of God's image. This provided equality with God, without creating additional gods. This unity was by one image of God expressed not only by God but by all humans making them one with God and with each other. Then Satan offered man an alternative image: man in his own image; making him a god who could chose for himself what was good or evil. The temptation was enough; and man bought his own image at the cost of fellowship with God.

Yet a problem remained: A problem of contradiction. Man now had his own image, but it was not the truth. It existed only in the imagination of his mind. By his imagined autonomy and self-determination man had made himself his own god, yet the truth of God's image stamped in his heart wouldn't let the reality of God go away - especially when man was in trouble. There is something about trouble that emboldens the heart’s expression. So the pressing need of daily survival enables the expression of the human heart's knowledge of God, enough to cause man's acknowledgment of God, even while affirming his own right of autonomy from God. This explains the near universal acknowledgement of God in worship and sacrifices to insure blessings of harvest and fertility etc. But the pride of the mind has prevented the full return of humanity to God's ownership of man.

Naturally, with increased security and assurance of provision the need to survive is diminished; consequently, the testimony of God from the heart is less welcome. In poor countries, there is not abundance of leisure through affluence and therefore the awareness of deity is greater. On the contrary, in those countries with established affluence the awareness of God is less. The abundance of wealth and leisure predictably gives boldness to the carnal mind's expressions in line with the idea that man is his own god. The reality of the only true God tends to diminish with the corresponding decrease in survival urgency.

So a man of means in an affluent society can go for years without praying, until he is suddenly out of the boat into the water, or hears the diagnosis of a week to three months left to live. Then suddenly the heart has the microphone again and God is real enough to pray to. But this was not the way God intended our existence. We were designed to guided by the truth of the heart rather than the imaginations of the mind - not just in death but in life as well.

The imaginations of the mind rob us of faith in God. The carnal mind is where man imagines that he is a god knowing good and evil. (Gen 3:4-5) "And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: {5} For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil."

What a bogus concept: "Man as a god, master of his fate and captain of his soul". It appeals to human arrogance and pride enough to sell self-image psychology making the authors rich - but it traps the heart of the buyer into mute acquiescence to self-destruction.

But we are not without remedy: Jesus Christ came to humanity to bring to us the power to harness carnal mind into obedience to the truth of the heart: (2 Cor 10:5) "Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;"

The reason we need to do this is that the carnal mind is where man imagines that he is a god, knowing good and evil. (Rom 8:7) "Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be." When the carnal mind is harnessed, then the heart can express the truth and issues of life. (Prov 4:23) "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."

The essence of life is simple. It is both the means and the reason for all human existence. The essence of life that flows from the heart in times of crisis is the central truth of the universe: There is one God. (Deu 6:4) "Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:"

Faith in one God is foundational to building any real meaning in life - and central to sustaining it. (Heb 11:6) "But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him." Out of this “truth of God's existence” is poured out all other connected truth into the heart of the man who believes. Professed faith in God is the starting point of the discovery of life's meaning. God has always exclusively existed and will always exclusively exist. Of course this is incomprehensible. Like space is incomprehensible without any perimeters possible; and time is incomprehensible without beginning or ending possible. God has always been as time has always been. He exists without limits as space exists without limits.

Humans have a very serious flaw: while they will accept the reality of unending time or space as a truth beyond their comprehension, they tend to reject a God whom they can't frame in their logic. They dismiss it as foolish - when the real folly is their dismissal of anything that so clearly exists. It is not for us to probe to intellectual satisfaction that which in unfathomable, rather it is for us to accept the mystery and to live in harmony with it.

Not only is God ever existent but God is about current miracles. As soon as we speak of faith in God, we speak in anticipation of the miraculous. From the universe that is ever expanding to the sun that keeps burning to the protons and neutrons that ever orbiting the nucleus to the amazing life in the cells of living creatures, God expresses his creativity and power in the realm of the miraculous. As soon as you say miracle, you can't draw a line anywhere. Faith says that God can do anything and everything that is needed or that He wishes. As obvious as the miraculous is to the believer, it is obscure to the unbeliever. This is because man is blinded by the falsehood of his own godhood to the reality of the only true God which he was created to extend and manifest.

The foundations of faith upon which God intended man could build his service to God were destroyed by the sins of man's fall from God image to self-image. However, Christ came to restore the foundation of faith to humanity upon which we could build eternal relationship with God. He did this by bringing to us again the image of God baptism of the Holy Ghost. (2 Cor 3:18) "But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord ."

The outpouring of the Holy Ghost on the day of Pentecost was the beginning of a new covenant that God was making with man. The Holy Ghost leads man back into all the truth lost by the fall and enables the recovery of the means to live by faith. (Heb 10:38) "Now the just shall live by faith..." (John 16:13) "Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth ...." (Jude 1:20) "But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost,."

The lack of faith means mere existing and not living. Jesus said he had come to enable us to once again live (John 10:10) "...I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly." We were made to live by faith - it is foundational to living and eternal salvation. (Mark 16:16) "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned."

The best way to build your faith is not by reading articles such as this, but by attending a powerful Apostolic Pentecostal church where you can hear uncompromising preaching of the word of God. This is because faith doesn't come by reading, but is does come by hearing. (Rom 10:17) "So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God." (John 17:20) "Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; "

Once you believe in God, the purpose of life becomes far more exciting than just another material acquisition or another human relationship. Life then becomes the ongoing discovery of God by unlimited access to expressions of his truth and revelation. In other words, you find the pleasures of discovery for evermore. (Psa 16:11) "Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore." Once you believe in God, then you know you can find him by searching for him with your whole heart. (Jer 29:13-14) "And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. {14} And I will be found of you, saith the LORD: .... "

This is why we don't like to miss any gathering at New Life Assembly. Usually when we come together there is more discovery of new truth and faith is thereby increased.

This then is the official position of New Life Assembly:

We affirm that God is real and exists for us today in all of the power that he has ever shown to man.

We affirm that in addition to the continual miracles that God is doing within each cell and molecule, he wants to work unusual miracles of healing and provision. He will do this for everyone who will believe in him enough to seek him out and give their lives to him. This is the foundation of the guiding principle of New Life Assembly.
